It also contains the colour substrates for ß-D-glucuronidase (blue \/ cyan \/ violet -  \u003ci\u003eE. coli\u003c\/i\u003e) and ß-D-galactosidase (salmon \/ magenta \/ red - other coliforms).Colonies of \u003ci\u003eE. coli\u003c\/i\u003e show a bright blue colour, while other coliforms grow in red to pink coloured colonies.
