La région de liaison a été localisée sur la partie extracellulaire de l'antigène. Avec les uroplakines UP Ia, UP Ib et UP II, l'uroplakine III contribue à constituer la membrane unitaire asymétrique des plaques des cellules superficielles (en parapluie) de l'urothélium. L'uroplakine est une glycoprotéine membranaire (47 kDa) et s'est avérée être un marqueur spécifique de la différenciation terminale de l'urothélium (Wu\u003ci\u003eet al.\u003c\/i\u003e1993 et 1194). L'anticorps AU1 colore fortement la membrane de surface urothéliale dans les coupes de paraffine du bassinet rénal humain, de l'uretère, de la vessie et de l'urètre. Environ 60 % des carcinomes à cellules transitionnelles humaines (y compris les métastases) maintiennent une expression focale (parfois très limitée) de l'uroplakine III.
