La tension superficielle du matériau à tester est déterminée par simple application de l'encre de test. Elles sont disponibles dans une plage de 18 à 105 mN\/m de tension superficielle, sous forme de flacon ou de stylo (28 à 72 mN\/m). Incolores : 18, 74, 76, 84, 90 et 105 mN\/m. Toxiques de 24 à 57 mN\/m. Résultat : si les bords de l'application faite au pinceau, au coton-tige ou au stylo se rétractent en l'espace de 2 secondes, répéter la mesure avec la valeur immédiatement inférieure. Si les bords s'étalent, répéter la mesure avec la valeur immédiatement supérieure.
