L'expression accrue de la Perilipine 2\/Adipophiline\/ADRP\/PLIN2 est un marqueur utile pour les pathologies caractérisées par une accumulation accrue de gouttelettes lipidiques. Ces maladies comprennent l'athérome, la stéatose, l'obésité et certains cas de liposarcome. Elle semble également être un marqueur puissant de l'athérosclérose. L'ADRP peut également être utilisé pour étudier l'entrée virale via les gouttelettes lipidiques.
