De ijsschilfers hebben een temperatuur van 0,5 °C; het onregelmatige, grote oppervlak zorgt voor een zeer goed koelend effect. Elke schilfer is verzadigd en stevig en ze kleven niet aan elkaar.
Er zijn twee versies verkrijgbaar: een standaardversie voor gebruik met drinkwater. Daarnaast is er een laboratoriumversie verkrijgbaar voor gebruik met gedemineraliseerd water (geleidbaarheid ≤30 μS).
