Questions about Lab instruments

What is a laboratory instrument?

An instrument either measures a quantity or applies a controlled physical action. A balance compares a mass with a standard. The reading is only as good as the chain back to the kilogram, which is why calibration and a certificate exist. A pH meter is a voltmeter on a glass electrode: the voltage tracks the hydrogen-ion activity. A spectrophotometer sends light through a sample and uses the Beer–Lambert relation between absorbance and concentration. A centrifuge separates by density under an increased gravitational field. An oven or a bath holds a temperature. A stirrer keeps a mixture uniform.

The category follows those jobs: balances, calibration, pH and electrochemistry, spectroscopy, microscopy, centrifuges, heating and cooling, stirring and shaking, temperature, liquid handling, vacuum and evaporation, ultrasonic baths, sieves and mills, density and viscosity, water purification and 3D printing. The measurement system itself is maintained by the BIPM, compared between countries by EURAMET, and accredited in Belgium by BELAC.

What sits in Lab instruments?
How do I specify a balance or a meter?

Readability, capacity and calibration are the three numbers that decide a balance. See balances and scales and calibration and certificates. Metrology references are the BIPM, EURAMET, NIST and Belgian accreditation at BELAC. pH work sits in pH and electrochemistry next to buffers and pH solutions in chemicals.
