What is chromatography?

A GC column is decided by the stationary phase, the film thickness, the length and the internal diameter. An SPE cartridge is decided by the sorbent, the bed mass and the tube volume. A vial is decided by the volume, the neck and the septum, on vials, caps and septa. The liquid of the mobile phase is chosen from solvents. None of these numbers is a guess: they come from the method the bench already runs.
