Description

Photometer for nitrate is a portable HI97xxx-series instrument for photometric determination of nitrate in freshwater, reporting 0,0 to 130 mg/L as NO3 and 0,0 to 30,0 mg/L as NO3-N. It applies a cadmium-reduction approach in which nitrate is converted to nitrite, then forms a coloured complex proportional to concentration under acidic conditions with sulfanilic acid and related reagents. An advanced sealed optical system combines an LED, 525 nm narrow-band interference filter and silicon photocell with fixed cuvette alignment for accurate, repeatable measurements. Resolution is 0,1 mg/L with accuracy of ±0,5 mg/L ±10 % of reading at 25 °C using round 24,6 mm cuvettes. Nitrate monitoring supports assessment of runoff, organic breakdown and anthropogenic inputs that can drive eutrophication. The kit from manufacturer Hanna Instruments arrives in a transport case with two capped cuvettes, plastic inserts, CAL CHECK™ standards, cleaning cloth, scissors, three 1,5 V batteries, quality certificate and manual; reagents must be ordered separately. CAL CHECK™ NIST-traceable standards allow performance checks and recalibration, while tutorial guidance, GLP data, storage of 50 results, reaction timer, battery indicator, auto-off and IP67 housing support reliable field and laboratory use.

Questions about Portable Photometer for Nitrate with CAL Check standards

What is this article?

Portable Photometer for Nitrate with CAL Check standards is the article on this page. Luminix Health distributes Hanna Instruments for laboratory use. It sits in Photometers & spectrophotometers, inside Spectroscopy & photometry, in Lab instruments.

A photometer reads absorbance at one or a few wavelengths. A spectrophotometer scans or selects many. Both send light through a cuvette or a well. The wavelength range, UV or visible, and the bandwidth decide what can be measured. A visible-only instrument cannot read a nucleic acid at 260 nm.

A photometer or spectrophotometer sends light through a sample and reads how much was absorbed. In the range where the Beer–Lambert relation holds, absorbance tracks concentration. A refractometer reads how a liquid bends light, which tracks dissolved solids. A polarimeter reads the rotation of polarised light, the classical measurement for sugars. The lamp, the wavelength and the cuvette path length are the three things that have to be right before the number means anything. The optical quantities trace to NIST and the BIPM.
