Elle a été trouvée dans les membranes des globules de graisse du lait et à la surface des gouttelettes lipidiques dans diverses lignées cellulaires cultivées ; inductible par l'étomoxir. L'expression accrue de la Perilipine 2/Adipophiline/ADRP/PLIN2 est un marqueur utile pour les pathologies caractérisées par une accumulation accrue de gouttelettes lipidiques. Ces maladies comprennent l'athérome, la stéatose, l'obésité et certains cas de liposarcome. Elle semble également être un marqueur puissant de l'athérosclérose. L'ADRP peut également être utilisé pour étudier l'entrée virale via les gouttelettes lipidiques. Immunolocalisation : La Perilipine 2/Adipophiline/ADRP/PLIN2 est détectée positivement dans les cellules glandulaires de la glande mammaire en lactation (les cellules ductales sont négatives), la zone fasciculée de la glande surrénale, les cellules de Sertoli du testicule, et dans les hépatocytes accumulant des graisses du foie gras cirrhotique alcoolique ; les adipocytes sont négatifs. Les macrophages positifs pour le CD 68 stockant des lipides sont également colorés positivement. Lignées cellulaires cultivées testées : PLC, MDCK.
