Semi-synthetic second generation cephalosporin derivate. Cefoxitin interferes with peptidoglycan layer composition during cell wall synthesis and is effective against a broad spectrum of gram-positive bacteria. Its effectivity against gram-negative bacteria is lower. Also active against anaerobic bacteria. Zone of inhibition analysis with Cefoxitin is used to detect methicilin resistance. Stable against cleavage by β-lactamase.
