La surface finement rodée offre une profondeur de rugosité réduite par rapport aux finitions plus grossières, ce qui diminue la quantité de graisse pour joints requise et réduit le risque de grippage des joints. Les joints rodés coniques restent la méthode de liaison la plus courante dans la construction d'appareils en verre ; cette douille forme la moitié femelle d'une étanchéité rigide et autoportante lorsqu'elle est accouplée à un cône correspondant.
