Le bouillon MR/VP est utilisé dans les séries colorées pour la différenciation des bacilles entériques à Gram négatif, sur la base des réactions au rouge de méthyle et de Voges-Proskauer du groupe Escherichia-Enterobacter. Le test au rouge de méthyle sert à différencier les micro-organismes qui produisent et maintiennent une concentration d'acide élevée de ceux qui produisent une quantité d'acide plus faible. Les bactéries Enterobacter oxydent l'acétylméthylcarbinol lors de la réaction de Voges-Proskauer, ce qui provoque une coloration rouge, contrairement aux Escherichia coli, ce qui n'est pas le cas.
