A Luer connector joins a syringe, a needle, a filter or a stopcock. Slip, lock, male and female are four different ends. An adapter that converts one to another is a small part and a common leak if the tapers do not match. Luer is a standard taper, not a thread.

A syringe is a barrel and a piston. A disposable syringe is for transfer and injection. A microlitre syringe is a precise analytical tool, often with a cemented or removable needle, used to inject into a chromatograph. The needle gauge and the point, and the Luer or cemented connection, have to match the job. A Luer slip and a Luer lock are not the same fitting.
