Het evenwichtsvochtgehalte wordt idealiter gemeten in een boorgat in het materiaal. Hiervoor is een dunne vochtsonde met een sondeschachtdiameter van 4 mm (aangesloten op een geschikt meetinstrument) geschikt, zodat het boorgat zo klein mogelijk blijft. Bescherm het tijdens de meting met een PTFE-dop tegen verontreiniging. Het boorgat kan eenvoudig worden afgedicht met hechtende boetseerklei. Het bijgeleverde meetinstrument (testo 635) berekent automatisch het materiaalvochtgehalte op basis van het gemeten evenwichtsvochtgehalte en geeft dit weer op het display. De materiaalvochtberekening is beschikbaar voor de volgende materialen: beton, hoogisolerende baksteen, massieve baksteen, hardhout, zachthout, cellenbeton, spaanplaat, calciumsulfaatgebonden gietvloer, cementgebonden gietvloer en kalkzandsteen.
