Moisture analysers

A moisture analyser is a balance with a halogen or infrared heater. It records the loss of mass as a sample dries and reports that loss as moisture. The temperature program and the sample mass decide whether the number is water or is decomposition.

A balance compares a mass with a standard. An analytical balance reads to 0.1 mg or finer and needs a draft shield and a stable bench. A precision balance is coarser and faster. A platform scale takes a heavier load. The reading is only as good as the calibration chain back to the kilogram, which is why test weights and a certificate exist. NIST publishes the same measurement foundations.
