Buffer solutions prepared from these are typically utilized in reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) when the sample forms acidic (oxonium ions (H3O+)) or basic (hydroxide ions (OH−)) groups. Buffers mitigate the impact of oxonium and hydroxide ions, thus reducing pH fluctuations.
