A controller or a filler draws liquid into a serological or a volumetric pipette so the mouth does not. A bulb, a wheel and an electronic controller are the three forms. The force and the filter that protects the controller from over-aspiration matter. It is not itself a measuring device.

A pipette moves a measured volume. A volumetric pipette delivers one line. A graduated pipette delivers along a scale. A Pasteur pipette is an uncalibrated transfer. A piston pipette uses a tip, and the tip has to seal on that pipette. A filter tip adds a barrier so aerosol from the sample does not reach the piston. Serological pipettes are the long graduated tubes used with a controller. The volume and the fit are the specification. Piston pipettes are treated under ISO laboratory apparatus. In-vitro work also meets ISO in vitro diagnostic systems.
