Description

Cannon-Fenske viscometer 500–2500 mm²/s is a glass capillary instrument for determining the kinematic viscosity of opaque liquids. Built to the Cannon-Fenske reverse-flow principle, it employs capillary number 450 and a constant K of 2,5 mm²/s² over the measuring range 500–2500 mm²/s. Tube length is 295 mm, allowing immersion in common laboratory viscosity baths. The design is specified for opaque media, supporting work with dark oils, emulsions and other non-transparent samples. Available from manufacturer Witeg as a single piece, the viscometer integrates into standard Cannon-Fenske timing procedures once thermal equilibrium is established. Capillary size and constant enable calculation of kinematic viscosity from measured flow time in mm²/s. Typical users include petroleum product testing, lubricant control, polymer solution characterisation and industrial quality assurance where reverse-flow geometry is preferred for opaque fluids.

This article is part of Viscometers, in Density & viscosity measurement.

Questions about Viscometer Cannon Fenske 500-2500

What is this article?

Viscometer Cannon Fenske 500-2500 is the article on this page. Luminix Health distributes Witeg for laboratory use. It sits in Viscometers, inside Density & viscosity measurement, in Lab instruments.

A capillary viscometer times the flow of a liquid through a tube. A rotational viscometer twists a spindle in the liquid. Both need a stated temperature. Kinematic and dynamic viscosity are different numbers. The capillary size has to put the flow time in the range the method allows.

Density is mass divided by volume. A hydrometer floats at a depth that depends on the density of the liquid. A pycnometer is a vessel of known volume that is weighed full. Viscosity is the resistance to flow. A capillary viscometer times how long a volume takes to fall through a tube. Both measurements need a stated temperature, because liquids change density and viscosity as they warm. The units trace to the BIPM and to NIST.
