Description
Photometer for total hardness HI97735C is a portable, battery-powered instrument for determining calcium and magnesium hardness in water across low, medium and high ranges. It measures 0 to 250 mg/L, 200 to 500 mg/L and 400 to 750 mg/L as CaCO3, corresponding to total hardness up to 42 °dH, using a method adapted from EPA-recommended method No. 130.1. When reagent is added to a sample containing calcium or magnesium, the solution turns red-violet; colour depth increases with concentration. An advanced optical system with LED and narrow-band interference filter at 466 nm provides accurate, repeatable results, while sealed optics and consistent cuvette seating reduce external interference. Supplied in a carrying case from manufacturer Hanna Instruments, the kit includes two round 24,6 mm cuvettes with caps, plastic inserts, NIST-traceable CAL Check™ standards, scissors, cuvette cleaning cloth, three 1,5 V batteries, instrument quality certificate and operating manual. Tutorial mode guides sample preparation and reagent use step by step. GLP recall of the last calibration, data storage, built-in reaction timer, battery-level indicator and automatic shut-off support routine laboratory and field work. Required reagents are ordered separately. Typical uses include cooling-tower monitoring, industrial laundry and water-quality control where hardness drives scaling or detergent demand.

Questions about Portable Photometer for Total Hardness with CAL Check standards
What is this article?
Portable Photometer for Total Hardness with CAL Check standards is the article on this page. Luminix Health distributes Hanna Instruments for laboratory use. It sits in Photometers & spectrophotometers, inside Spectroscopy & photometry, in Instruments de laboratoire.
A photometer reads absorbance at one or a few wavelengths. A spectrophotometer scans or selects many. Both send light through a cuvette or a well. The wavelength range, UV or visible, and the bandwidth decide what can be measured. A visible-only instrument cannot read a nucleic acid at 260 nm.
A photometer or spectrophotometer sends light through a sample and reads how much was absorbed. In the range where the Beer–Lambert relation holds, absorbance tracks concentration. A refractometer reads how a liquid bends light, which tracks dissolved solids. A polarimeter reads the rotation of polarised light, the classical measurement for sugars. The lamp, the wavelength and the cuvette path length are the three things that have to be right before the number means anything. The optical quantities trace to NIST and the BIPM.
Which category should I open next?
