Calibration & test weights

A test weight is a mass of a stated class, used to check a balance. The class sets the tolerance. A weight that is dirty, or that has been handled with bare fingers, is no longer that class. The certificate ties the weight to a standard.

A balance compares a mass with a standard. An analytical balance reads to 0.1 mg or finer and needs a draft shield and a stable bench. A precision balance is coarser and faster. A platform scale takes a heavier load. The reading is only as good as the calibration chain back to the kilogram, which is why test weights and a certificate exist. A moisture analyser is a balance with a heater: it records the loss of mass as water leaves. The unit of mass is kept by the BIPM, compared across Europe by EURAMET, and accredited by BELAC. NIST publishes the same measurement foundations.
