Xyleen is het standaard-tussenmiddel in de histologie omdat het mengbaar is met alcoholen zoals isopropanol en ethanol, evenals met paraffine. Het wordt in deze context gebruikt als tussenstap tussen oplopende alcoholreeksen en het inbedden in paraffine. Dit zorgt ervoor dat de alcohol volledig uit het weefsel wordt verwijderd.
