Description
Portable Refractometer for Beer HI96841 measures the sugar content of wort during beer production and converts the refractive index reading into °Plato at the touch of a button. The result supports assessment of potential alcohol content in the finished beer; measurement of fermented product is not suitable because alcohol interferes with the reading. Operation is straightforward via a large dual-line display and a few keys, with results available in about 1,5 seconds. The stainless steel sample well needs a minimum of 100 µL to cover the prism, and calibration uses distilled or deionized water. Sugar range is 0 to 30 °Plato at 0,1 °Plato resolution and ±0,2 °Plato accuracy. Temperature is shown from 0,0 to 80,0 °C with 0,1 °C resolution and ±0,3 °C accuracy, under automatic compensation between 0 and 40 °C. A yellow LED, stainless steel ring and flint-glass prism form the measuring cell in an IP65 housing. Supplied with battery and manual, the unit from manufacturer Hanna Instruments runs on a 9 V battery for roughly 5000 measurements, shuts off after three minutes idle, and measures 192 × 102 × 67 mm at 420 g.
This article is part of Refractometers & polarimeters, in Spectroscopy & photometry.

Questions about Refractometer for beer, Plato 0-30
What is this article?
Refractometer for beer, Plato 0-30 is the article on this page. Luminix Health distributes Hanna Instruments for laboratory use. It sits in Refractometers & polarimeters, inside Spectroscopy & photometry, in Lab instruments.
A refractometer reads the refractive index of a liquid, often expressed as Brix for sugar. A polarimeter reads the rotation of polarised light. Both depend on temperature. A handheld refractometer and a thermostated benchtop instrument are different accuracies.
A photometer or spectrophotometer sends light through a sample and reads how much was absorbed. In the range where the Beer–Lambert relation holds, absorbance tracks concentration. A refractometer reads how a liquid bends light, which tracks dissolved solids. A polarimeter reads the rotation of polarised light, the classical measurement for sugars. The lamp, the wavelength and the cuvette path length are the three things that have to be right before the number means anything. The optical quantities trace to NIST and the BIPM.
