What is a laboratory instrument?

An instrument either measures a quantity or applies a controlled physical action. A balance compares a mass with a standard. The reading is only as good as the chain back to the kilogram, which is why calibration and a certificate exist. A pH meter is a voltmeter on a glass electrode: the voltage tracks the hydrogen-ion activity. A spectrophotometer sends light through a sample and uses the Beer–Lambert relation between absorbance and concentration. A centrifuge separates by density under an increased gravitational field.
