Description
The HI97719C magnesium hardness photometer is a portable, battery-powered meter for photometric determination of magnesium hardness from 0,00 to 2,00 mg/L (as CaCO3) with 0,01 mg/L resolution. Part of the HI97xxx series, it combines a sealed optical path, LED illumination and a narrow-band interference filter at 525 nm with a silicon photocell detector for stable, repeatable results. Accuracy at 25 °C is ±0,11 mg/L ±5 % of the reading, using an EDTA colorimetric method adapted from Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater, 23rd Edition. Magnesium and calcium carbonates largely define water hardness; elevated hardness contributes to scale in pipes, boilers and appliances and can promote corrosion in heating, cooling, reverse-osmosis and demineralisation systems. CAL Check™ with NIST-traceable standards enables on-demand performance checks and recalibration, while the tutorial mode steps through preparation and reagent volumes. GLP last-calibration recall, storage of the last 50 readings, reaction timer, battery indicator, auto shut-off, IP67 rating and a backlit 128 × 64 LCD support reliable routine use. Delivered from manufacturer Hanna Instruments in a carrying case with two capped measuring cuvettes, plastic inserts, CAL Check™ standards, scissors, cuvette cleaning cloth, three 1,5 V AA batteries, instrument quality certificate and operating manual; required reagents are ordered separately.

Questions about Portable Photometer for Magnesium hardness with CAL Check standards
What is this article?
Portable Photometer for Magnesium hardness with CAL Check standards is the article on this page. Luminix Health distributes Hanna Instruments for laboratory use. It sits in Photometers & spectrophotometers, inside Spectroscopy & photometry, in Lab instruments.
A photometer reads absorbance at one or a few wavelengths. A spectrophotometer scans or selects many. Both send light through a cuvette or a well. The wavelength range, UV or visible, and the bandwidth decide what can be measured. A visible-only instrument cannot read a nucleic acid at 260 nm.
A photometer or spectrophotometer sends light through a sample and reads how much was absorbed. In the range where the Beer–Lambert relation holds, absorbance tracks concentration. A refractometer reads how a liquid bends light, which tracks dissolved solids. A polarimeter reads the rotation of polarised light, the classical measurement for sugars. The lamp, the wavelength and the cuvette path length are the three things that have to be right before the number means anything. The optical quantities trace to NIST and the BIPM.
