Cartridges, lamps and final filters are the consumables of a water system. A spent ion-exchange cartridge lets ions through, and the resistivity falls. The cartridge has to be the one that model names. A cartridge from a different brand with a similar shape is a leak or a bypass.

Laboratory water is a reagent. Tap water carries ions, organics and microbes that become part of every result they touch. A pure-water system takes most of them out. An ultrapure system, often a polisher after a first stage, is what HPLC, cell culture and trace analysis ask for. Resistivity, total organic carbon and endotoxin are different claims. A cartridge is spent when the number drifts, not when the calendar says so. The measurement of those impurities sits with NIST and the BIPM.
