Description

The portable digital refractometer HI96821 determines the salt content of flowable aqueous media encountered in the food sector by refractive-index measurement. It provides fast, straightforward readings across multiple salinity scales: 0 to 28 g/100 g, 0 to 34 g/100 ml (vol%), specific gravity 1,000 to 1,216, and 0 to 26 °Baumé, with corresponding resolutions of 0,1 g/100 g, 0,1 g/100 ml, 0,001 specific gravity and 0,1 °Baumé, and accuracies of ±0,2 g/100 g, ±0,2 g/100 ml, ±0,002 specific gravity and ±0,2 °Baumé. Temperature is covered from 0 to 80 °C at 0,1 °C resolution and ±0,3 °C accuracy, with automatic temperature compensation from 10 to 40 °C and a response time of about 1,5 seconds. Only two drops of sample are required in the stainless-steel ring with glass prism; a yellow LED serves as the light source. Calibration uses distilled or deionized water. Dual-line display, few-key operation, BEPS, auto shut-off after three minutes idle, and an IP65 housing suit daily food-industry checks. The unit from manufacturer Hanna Instruments measures 192 × 102 × 67 mm, weighs 420 g, uses one 9 V battery for roughly 5000 operating hours, and is offered as a single piece.

Questions about Digital refractometer for sodium chloride measurement for the food industry

What is this article?

Digital refractometer for sodium chloride measurement for the food industry is the article on this page. Luminix Health distributes Hanna Instruments for laboratory use. It sits in Refractometers & polarimeters, inside Spectroscopy & photometry, in Lab instruments.

A refractometer reads the refractive index of a liquid, often expressed as Brix for sugar. A polarimeter reads the rotation of polarised light. Both depend on temperature. A handheld refractometer and a thermostated benchtop instrument are different accuracies.

A photometer or spectrophotometer sends light through a sample and reads how much was absorbed. In the range where the Beer–Lambert relation holds, absorbance tracks concentration. A refractometer reads how a liquid bends light, which tracks dissolved solids. A polarimeter reads the rotation of polarised light, the classical measurement for sugars. The lamp, the wavelength and the cuvette path length are the three things that have to be right before the number means anything. The optical quantities trace to NIST and the BIPM.
