Description
Digital refractometer for sugar analysis HI96800 determines the sucrose content of fluid media typical of the food sector by refractive-index measurement. Results appear in % Brix and as refractive index, either temperature-compensated (nD20) or uncompensated (nD). The instrument from manufacturer Hanna Instruments is simple to operate and delivers fast digital readings on a large two-line display. Calibration uses distilled or deionised water, and the stainless-steel sample well needs only 100 µL to cover the prism. Measuring ranges are 1,3300 to 1,5080 nD, 1,3330 to 1,5040 nD20 and 0 to 85 % Brix, with resolutions of 0,0001 nD, 0,0001 nD20 and 0,1 % Brix and accuracies of ±0,0005 nD, ±0,0005 nD20 and ±0,2 % Brix. Temperature is measured from 0,0 to 80,0 °C at 0,1 °C resolution and ±0,3 °C accuracy. Automatic temperature compensation operates between 10 and 40 °C; a reading takes about 1,5 seconds with a yellow LED, stainless-steel ring and flint-glass prism. The IP65 housing offers BEPS protection and auto shut-off after 3 minutes. A 9 V battery supports roughly 5000 measurements. Dimensions are 192 mm × 102 mm × 67 mm at 420 g; battery and instructions are included.

Questions about Digital refractometer for sugar analysis
What is this article?
Digital refractometer for sugar analysis is the article on this page. Luminix Health distributes Hanna Instruments for laboratory use. It sits in Refractometers & polarimeters, inside Spectroscopy & photometry, in Lab instruments.
A refractometer reads the refractive index of a liquid, often expressed as Brix for sugar. A polarimeter reads the rotation of polarised light. Both depend on temperature. A handheld refractometer and a thermostated benchtop instrument are different accuracies.
A photometer or spectrophotometer sends light through a sample and reads how much was absorbed. In the range where the Beer–Lambert relation holds, absorbance tracks concentration. A refractometer reads how a liquid bends light, which tracks dissolved solids. A polarimeter reads the rotation of polarised light, the classical measurement for sugars. The lamp, the wavelength and the cuvette path length are the three things that have to be right before the number means anything. The optical quantities trace to NIST and the BIPM.
