Description

Cannon-Fenske viscometer 20,0–100 mm²/s is a reverse-flow capillary glass instrument for kinematic viscosity determination of opaque liquids. The tube measures 295 mm in length and uses capillary no. 200, covering the measuring range 20–100 mm²/s with instrument constant K of 0,1 mm²/s². In the Cannon-Fenske reverse-flow arrangement the sample meniscus remains readable even when the fluid is dark, cloudy or otherwise non-transparent, which makes the design particularly appropriate for heavier oils, suspensions and process media that cannot be assessed reliably with ordinary suspended-level viscometers. After equilibration in a temperature-controlled bath, efflux time is measured and converted to kinematic viscosity using the given constant. The instrument is supplied as a single piece from manufacturer Witeg and has a net weight of 0,067 kg. Its 295 mm format fits standard laboratory viscosity baths and supports quality-control and research applications that require consistent viscosity data on opaque fluids in the higher portion of the capillary range.

This article is part of Viscometers, in Density & viscosity measurement.

Questions about Viscometer Cannon Fenske 20.0-100

What is this article?

Viscometer Cannon Fenske 20.0-100 is the article on this page. Luminix Health distributes Witeg for laboratory use. It sits in Viscometers, inside Density & viscosity measurement, in Lab instruments.

A capillary viscometer times the flow of a liquid through a tube. A rotational viscometer twists a spindle in the liquid. Both need a stated temperature. Kinematic and dynamic viscosity are different numbers. The capillary size has to put the flow time in the range the method allows.

Density is mass divided by volume. A hydrometer floats at a depth that depends on the density of the liquid. A pycnometer is a vessel of known volume that is weighed full. Viscosity is the resistance to flow. A capillary viscometer times how long a volume takes to fall through a tube. Both measurements need a stated temperature, because liquids change density and viscosity as they warm. The units trace to the BIPM and to NIST.
