Histofluid is a colourless, clear adhesive dissolved in xylene that hardens rapidly and is well suited to mounting microscopic preparations thanks to its optical properties. Specimens can be examined and archived shortly after coverslipping; the medium can also be used to secure bottle closures. Even after prolonged storage and temperature changes, Histofluid layers show neither cracks nor dimensional change, do not yellow under extended UV exposure, do not fluoresce, form no bubbles, and help preserve sensitive stains thanks to an acid number of 0. The refractive index of 1,5 (nD 20 °C) is matched to slide and coverslip glass. It is water-repellent and soluble in xylene, acetone, chloroform, dioxane and toluene, and remains stable indefinitely in closed bottles. From manufacturer Marienfeld, Histofluid is filled as 500 ml portions in dangerous-goods tin bottles with UN marking and supplied as 9 pieces per carton. Owing to its solvent content it is flammable (UN 1307 XYLENE, resin solution, packing group III, class 3) and is not registered for in-vitro diagnostic applications within the EU; packing and transport must follow applicable dangerous-goods rules.
