Labware

Labware is the apparatus that holds, transfers, heats or measures a liquid or a solid in the laboratory. It is not the instrument that reads a value, and it is not the chemical itself. A beaker is a general vessel. A volumetric flask is a measuring vessel: it is calibrated to contain one stated volume at a reference temperature, and that calibration is the whole point of the object. Class A and class AS glassware have a tighter tolerance than class B. Borosilicate glass expands little when heated, which is why it is used for beakers and flasks and for distillation. Soda-lime glass is cheaper and less resistant to thermal shock. Plastics such as polypropylene, polyethylene and PTFE are chosen when the article must not break, or when the liquid attacks glass.

The shelves follow that logic. Volumetric glassware is for the measurement. Bottles and containers are for keeping the liquid. Tubes and vials and cuvettes hold a small sample, the cuvette being an optical cell. Funnels, dishes and crucibles, closures, tubing and fittings, stands and clamps and tools complete the bench.
